1. Our Environmental Commitment
Bicycles produce zero emissions. Every bike rental with On The Go Bike directly replaces a motorised trip โ whether that's a boda boda, taxi, or tourist vehicle. We estimate that each 4-hour rental saves approximately 1.2kg of COโ compared to the equivalent motorised journey.
We are committed to growing a fleet that makes sustainable exploration the default choice for visitors to Zanzibar.
2. Smart Technology for Less Waste
Our GPS smart lock system means no paper tickets, no plastic wristbands, and no physical keys. Every rental is managed digitally โ from booking to return. Our QR-based system eliminates the waste typically associated with traditional rental operations.
3. Local Community First
- All our station partners are locally-owned hotels, guesthouses, and businesses.
- We employ local staff at every station, contributing directly to employment in coastal communities.
- We pay fair commissions to our station partners and prioritise long-term relationships over short-term profit.
- We actively discourage routes that disturb local communities, fishing operations, or natural habitats.
4. Responsible Tourism Routes
We guide our customers toward routes that respect local culture and the environment:
- Ride early morning or late afternoon to avoid heat and reduce disruption to beach communities.
- Use designated paths and roads โ not through protected marine areas or private farmland.
- Slow down through villages and fishing communities โ you are a guest in their home.
- Leave no litter. Zanzibar's beaches and roads are beautiful โ help us keep them that way.
5. Bicycle Maintenance and Longevity
We maintain our fleet to the highest standard. Well-maintained bikes last longer, require fewer replacements, and are safer for riders. Our maintenance programme includes regular inspections, prompt repairs, and responsible disposal of worn components.
6. Our Goals
- Expand to all major tourist areas of Zanzibar by 2027 โ making sustainable transport accessible island-wide.
- Partner with local schools to offer discounted or free rentals for Zanzibari students.
- Achieve carbon-neutral operations by 2028 through renewable energy at our stations.
- Plant one tree for every 100 rentals completed, in partnership with local conservation organisations.
